The story of Iveragh United

Iveragh Utd was originally formed in 2007 after 4 parents came together to discuss if it was viable to run a soccer club for all ages in South Kerry. Sean Coffey, Caroline Cronin and Ann and Alan Landers held their first meeting in May 2007 to discuss and devise a plan to set up the club.

A committee needed to be formed and a lot of questions needed to be answered regarding the feasibility of starting g a soccer club in a GAA stronghold.

Such was the push to get the club off the ground the committee invested their own money to get posters and flyers printed. A deal was made with the local OTW Sports centre(?) to rent the Astro-pitch short term to begin with and a long term commitment should the Club be a success.

Flyers and posters were hand delivered by the Chairman and his Vice Chairman all over South Kerry to all the Primary Schools. Parents and teachers were excited at the prospect of a local soccer club.

Within days of the flyers being handed out the phones began to ring with enquiries. The committee were meeting 2 or 3 times a week trying to make decisions on the start up and running of a brand new club.

The club's name was decided 'Iveragh United' as the committee wanted all children from Mountain Stage to Kelly's Cross to feel a belonging to what would be their club. A full red kit with a white trim was decided as the Club colours.

In 2008 after much coaching and participating in invitational tournaments we put our teams in to the Leagues. In that first full year we had great success as our u16's finished runners up in their league. Our u14's completed and won their league and our u12's went through their season unbeaten.

The first year was a great success and testament to all the work done by the committee.

As the recession hit the club had to close down as coaches had left the area to find work; it was a sad time and feelings of failure prevailed. Thankfully Iveragh Utd managed to get back on it's feet again in 2014 stronger than ever and went on the win 3 premier ships in a row, our first cup and our 3rd shield final in a row.

The club has gone from strength to strength including now 34% of membership being from our girls' teams. The Club is now headed by a new committee who are equally keen and eager to take on the reigns to ensure that Iveragh Utd will continue to run as a much needed asset to the South Kerry Community.

Iveragh United's sponsors

Iveragh United's could not operate without the support of our sponsors whose kind donations allow our volunteers to make the club the success it has undoubtedly been.

Devlin's Centra have supported the club for some years now and last year we were fortunate enough to receive funding from Eurosports Management Gmbh, a leading German sports marketing company, Inver, one of Ireland's leading fuel suppliers, The Oratory, Cahersiveen's gourmet pizza restaurant and Skellig Gift Store in Cahersiveen.

Iveragh United is also proud to support Jigsaw, which is part of a national network supported by Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health, in their work with young people.

Thanks to the sponsorship and the good work done by our team of volunteers we have new shirts for most of the teams for the upcoming season and we can't wait to see the players in action wearing the new strips.

We are always looking for more sponsorship so please spread the word about Iveragh United FC!
